As a freelancer, repeat business is of paramount importance. You want to make sure that the money is coming in month after month. However, securing repeat business is not always easy. Not following up – One of the main reasons why you haven’t secured repeat business is because you haven’t followed up. A lot of people assume that if the client wanted something, surely they would get back in contact with them. However, clients often get wrapped up in other projects, and so simply following up can make a massive difference. Ignoring or refusing revision requests – As a freelancer, you deliver some form of quality assurance as part of the service you provide. You, therefore, need to accept revision requests. However, on the whole, if you swallow your pride and cater to the client’s demands, you will increase the likelihood of them coming back for more work.
Ignoring emails – You are expected to check your emails regularly if you work online. There are a lot of freelancers who do prefer to close their inbox during work hours so that they are not distracted. This is understandable, but you need to know where to draw the line. Your clients will be irritated if you reply a day or two later.
Missing your deadlines – Your clients want you to deliver your work when you say you are going to deliver it. If you don’t, the whole assembly line can break down, as it is likely your work is contributing to a bigger project. Of course, there are instances whereby you are going to be late and you simply can’t help it. If this happens, you need to let your client know as soon as possible, explain the situation, and apologize for it.
Letting quality take a slide – It can be somewhat easy to allow quality to take the backseat when you have a deadline to meet. However, quality always needs to come first. A lack of quality is one of the main reasons why people do not order more work from their freelancer.
