Whether you are managing a team or working from within one, it can be difficult to keep track of whatever one is doing, their current progress and have easy channels for people to communicate. This can be made even more difficult if you work from home or with a group of fellow freelancers. Fortunately, there are some incredibly useful pieces of software around that can help you and your team.
Slack is fantastic. It allows you and your team to communicate through the internet, quickly transfer files, set up polls, and do a myriad of other useful things thanks to its ever-growing number of plugins. At its core, Slack allows you to quickly catch up with each team member individually as well as create groups for discussions about specific areas or focuses. Everything that you talk about is saved within your Slack group, so you can quickly search through for the information that you need. The whole thing is password protected, so none of your information is going to be leaked to the outside world. If you aren’t currently using Slack, then you should seriously consider doing so as it is one of the best ways to talk to and discuss projects with your team. You can star important items, and you can even make voice calls with your team like you would through something like Skype.
You should never discount how incredibly useful Google Docs is. You can quickly share a document directly to somebody’s email address and then they can make changes to that same document. You can work on the same Google Doc together even when you might be thousands of miles apart. If you don’t want to make direct changes, then you can leave suggestions for the person to pick up later. When you combine Google Docs with Google Drive, then things only get better. Google Drive can house all of your project documents and if shared correctly, anyone on your team and drop in and out of them. There are a lot of excellent collaboration tools for content, and you shouldn’t discount how useful and free Google Docs is. These same Google Docs can then be shared or dropped into Slack so that other members of your team can view or edit them.
Trello is essentially project management software but simplified so that anybody can use it. You don’t need to get a qualification in Prince2 to be able to effectively manage your project. Trello allows you to create boxes that string together and allows you to assign people a task and submit them as completed along with a lot of other really useful features. Trello is available in your web browser and your smartphone, so you can always be kept up to date with the changes to your project. There is a free version, but if you want to get the most of Trello or you have a larger team, then you will want to get one of the paid subscriptions. Trello makes managing and monitoring your project easy, and it integrates with other things on this list such as Google Docs and Slack, so all your software can work in tandem.
