There’s a variety of opportunities out there to become a VA — you can contract with a virtual assistant company, freelance your services and even start your own VA business.
Virtual assistant jobs are versatile and flexible. They’re perfect for the side-hustling mama to the full-time freelancer (and everyone in between).
What is a virtual assistant?
A virtual assistant helps a business run, all while staying virtual (most likely at home or at their own virtual assistant office). You can be contracted for one project (such as blog design) or it can be a continuing job such as replying to e-mails, managing social media accounts and comments.
“Why would anyone hire a virtual assistant?”
Well, why WOULDN’T someone hire help? A business is a lot of work, and if you can outsource some of the things that need to be done so that you can focus more on the end goal and direction of your business, then why not?
Also, one person realistically cannot do everything. When help is needed, it’s best to look for it because your business could end up going downhill because of it. A business owner also does not want to sacrifice quality.
Quality tends to be sacrificed when one person is trying to do a 5 person job. That’s where a virtual assistant can come in!

So, what does a virtual assistant do?

1. Social Media Assistant. Have you ever felt like there are so many different forms of social media and it’s all very hard to handle?
Imagine if you have a business or multiple businesses you are trying to handle. Working through all of these can be very hard. You might help with their Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Blog, etc., all in order to connect with the target audience.
2. Website Design. Website design is very important, especially for a new blog because it can set the tone for your blog and helps you with a good start.
And if you’re like me, then you have no artistic or creative skills at all, so a website designer is needed badly.
As a website designer, there are so many things that can be done:

- banner advertisements
3. Editor. An editor does many things and can encompass many different industries. For this post, we will talk about being a blog or website editor.
A blog editor helps manage the actual writing of the website. Before articles are published, the editor may read through it, edit it, proofread, and then eventually publish the piece.
The editor may also handle search engine optimization (SEO) in order for the business/blog/website/etc. to rank higher in search engines and therefore be seen by more people. SEO will be talked about further in yet another post.
4. Market Research. Depending on the business and the market, research may be needed. A business needs to learn who its target audience is, and also how to reach this audience.
A market researcher can find your audience, inform you on how to reach this audience, tell you what type of articles or products you should focus on and everything else.
5. Writer. Hiring an additional writer for your blog can make things a lot easier.
You have one less post to worry about, and you can engage your readers with more than one viewpoint.
Also, with multiple writers, you can focus more on other things that are going on with your website. A writer can also manage the blog altogether.
What does it take to be a virtual assistant?
Given that virtual assistants are entirely remote, you’ll need a computer, high-speed internet and telephone to stay connected with clients and complete tasks. A number of backgrounds and work experiences translate really well to a career as a virtual assistant.
The bottom line is if you enjoy helping others, are great at getting things done, and know a trick or two when it comes to prioritizing tasks and maximizing time, you’d make a great VA — regardless of your previous experience.

While some people choose to create their own virtual assistant job, others are more interested in contracting with a company.
There are tons of companies that hire virtual assistants or match them with clients in need. But, it can be difficult to weed out the scams from the legitimate virtual assistant companies.
Fortunately for you, I took most of the stress out by creating this list of scam-free virtual assistant companies that you can get started with:

You can use Craigslist to find businesses near you, or across the country, that may be in need of your virtual assistant services.
First, choose a city. Then, underneath the Jobs section, you’ll find the Gigs section, which you can browse to find virtual assistant jobs. Just be careful when using Craigslist, that you don’t wind up in a scam.
Equivity hires professional virtual assistants with a college degree to work from home supporting their clients.

GoLance is a freelance bidding site to match you with clients. Virtual assistants can browse the Customer Service, Admin Support, or other categories that match their skills.
You can also browse jobs by pay rate, experience level, number of hours needed per week, and more.
Guru is another freelance bidding site where you can find virtual assistant work in a number of categories. You’ll be able to see the type of work needed and a proposed pay rate before you apply to a client’s post.
Indeed is a job listing website that lists several online jobs, including virtual assistant jobs. Simply search “virtual assistant”, and you can find the most recent job listings for virtual assistants.
You can also see if there are any openings for virtual assistants for businesses in your area if you’d like to provide services for local businesses.

As long as you have a few internet, computer, or phone skills, you likely can start a career as a virtual assistant.
